About Our Union
What is the Glendale Education Association?
GEA is a professional association and labor union representing educators and school staff in the Glendale Elementary School District. Like the Arizona Education Association (AEA), we advocate for students, educators, and public education at the local, state, and national levels.
Are you affiliated with a larger organization?
Yes. Our local is affiliated with the Arizona Education Association (AEA), which is the state affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA), the largest professional employee organization in the United States.
Membership
Who can join?
Membership is open to all certified and classified employees of the Glendale Elementary School District.
How much are dues?
Certified employees: $37.35 per pay period (20 pay periods, no charge in the summer)
Classified $22.28 per pay period
Part-time employees are pro-rated.
Where do my dues go?
NONE of your dues pays for any political contributions.
Your annual dues are broken up into three pots:
1. $11.10: National Education Association: This money is used towards federal educational lobbying and to help facilitate the Teacher's Union core infrastructure. (30% of your dues)
2. $22.30: Arizona Education Association: This money is used to hire staff that works towards lobbying for education in the state house, paying for staff members who meet with locals and help with many of their concerns, and staff members who do things like help get Prop 208 passed. (60% of dues)
3. $4.00: Glendale Education Association: This money is used to host teacher events, social events, and training throughout the year. The money is also used for stipends for our advocates who meet and advocate for members. (10% of dues)

What professional development is available?
Through AEA and local affiliates, members may access:
Free workshops and webinars
Micro-credentials
Professional growth programs created by educators
Clock hours for certificate renewal
In some cases, opportunities for graduate credit (arizonaea.org)
Completing union-sponsored professional development may count toward certificate renewal.
Advocacy & Legislative Action
Does GEA engage in political advocacy?
Like AEA and NEA, local unions advocate for:
Increased school funding
Competitive educator salaries
Safe working conditions
Policies that strengthen public education (influencewatch.org)
Advocating for nonpartisan candidates for local school boards whose vision aligns with union educators.
Members may choose their level of involvement in advocacy efforts.
Collective Bargaining & Contracts
“Meet & confer” is a process where the union meets with district leadership to negotiate working conditions and policies, even in districts without formal collective bargaining
Does the union negotiate our contract?
In districts with bargaining rights or meet-and-confer agreements, the union:
Negotiates salary schedules
Advocates for benefits
Works to improve working conditions
Ensures contract enforcement
